Essentials Letters and Sounds
Following an update from the DfE around phonics teaching we have moved to Essential Letters and Sounds (ELS), this is a phonics programme based on Letters and Sounds (2007). This new phonics programme will support your children in making quick progress to become fluent and confident readers.
ELS is based on simplicity and consistency, and the programme is delivered through daily whole-class lessons, with ongoing assessments to inform teachers of extra targeted interventions to support all children's needs. This is so children ‘keep up’ rather than ‘catch up’.
The programme is designed so consistent terminology is used by teachers, children and parents, as well as using fully decodable books for the children to access independently and apply the graphemes that have been taught during lessons. Our fully decodable books are designed to precisely match ELS and each of the phonics teaching Sets. It means that your child can enjoy reading books that practice the exact grapheme-phoneme correspondences that they have just been taught by their teacher.
