Our journey with Reading starts whenever a child starts at Mount Carmel. They are immediately assessed in the first week to see where their reading ability starts. There we build on their reading skills at every age phase. In the Early Years and KS1 we follow the Letter and Sounds Phonic Scheme.
In EYFS and KS1 we learn to read. In KS2 we read to learn. We believe that every good reader leads to a good writer and we have invested heavily into reading across the school.
Our aim is to make every child passionate about reading. We do this through our own specially designed curriculum. We have ensured the skills from the National Curriculum are met and planned using our key reading domains: these domains consist of Prediction, Summarisation, Vocabulary, Retrieval, Inference, Decode, Compare and Explain Language.
In addition to that, we believe that Whole Class Reading (WCR) engages every child at every level. With the teacher leading challenging questions and full class participation, it raises standards to every child. With all subjects coming from the class book, learning has a meaning for children.
We believe in the value of WCR as all children are given the opportunity to engage in the a skills lesson, regardless of reading ability. The opportunity for the teacher to guide and help children to gain a deeper understanding of any text they read, as well as have the opportunity to discuss key concepts with partner.
Children can take up their own independent love for reading with the books that are in the school library or from the library that is in every classroom, set in a reading area.
We recognise that some children will have a barrier to reading and it is our role to help them overcome that barrier. We do that through, Bug Club sessions and 1:1 targeted work.
